Discussion

Live Zoom Classes

As a fourth-year seminar, HIST 492 has a heavy emphasis on student-focused discussion. This structure means that our live Zoom classes will be focus on your thoughts about our readings, the podcast episode (if assigned) and the Game of Thrones episodes that we watched. My role is to act as facilitator, posing questions created by the discussion leaders to start our discussion and keep it moving.

Structure/Zoom format:

  • The class will be divided into Group A and Group B. Each group will meet for 80 minutes. Please let me know if you specifically need to be in the early or late group. Otherwise, I will assign the group members.
  • Students are not required to have cameras on during class time.
  • To respond to a question or make a comment, please either: use the “raise hand” feature in Zoom or post COMMENT/QUESTION in the chat thread.
  • I would prefer that our discussion take place verbally, rather than through comments on the chat thread; HOWEVER, if you are having technical issues, please let me know and we can have you participate through the chat thread.
  • Questions used for each discussion class will be created by the leaders assigned to that topic. The same questions will be used for both Group A and Group B. See below for more details on the discussion leader role.

This portion of your grade will be based on:

  • attending in class sessions (with the understanding that technical issues and life emergencies happen)
  • Participating in the entire group and break out room discussions.

I know that some of you have unstable internet and may have issues accessing our live classes. If this is a problem for you, please contact me and we will work out a solution.

Chatboard

We are using a chatboard as a communication tool and to facilitate the on demand portion of our discussion. To access the chatboard, click on “chat” in the course website menu.

Format:

  • Discussion leaders will post questions in all groups on Tuesday morning.
  • Participants should respond to at least 1 question and 1 comment by Sunday. These responses should engage with the question asked and the comments made by the poster. But you can also participate in a series of shorter posts as a discussion to make up your group.

Discussion Leader

This aspect of this course will be completed in partners or as a group of three.

In Class Discussion role:

  • Submit 10 questions and one class activity to me by Saturday at midnight, based on the readings, the podcast episode (if assigned), and the focus episode of Game of Thrones.
  • The activity can divide questions up among the group, brainstorm ideas on a topic or use specific clips/readings as a focus…it’s really up to you! When you submit the activity, make sure there is a description so that I can run it as you may not be in the group I’m facilitating.
  • I will run both discussion groups based on your questions and activity.

Tips on Discussion Questions

Chatboard role:

  • Post 1-2 questions related to the episodes assigned for the week (can be any of them) and how they relate to the specific podcast episode for the week.
  • You will post the same questions in all FOUR discussion groups.
  • You are responsible for monitoring and responding to the points made by each group from Tuesday to Sunday. If someone asks a question you can’t answer, tag me @dwl
